Greece & Turkey Hit by Strong Earthquake
On Friday, a strong earthquake struck in the Aegean Sea, causing damage in western Turkey and on islands in eastern Greece. Though the center of the earthquake was close to the Greek island of Samos, the effects of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake were worse in Turkey.
In the large city of Izmir, home to 4.3 million people, dozens of buildings were damaged or completely destroyed. Hundreds of people have been injured and 39 people died.

The earthquake triggered hundreds of aftershocks, one of which had a magnitude of 5.1. The aftershocks have made it much more difficult for workers to rescue people trapped by collapsed buildings.
On Samos, several buildings were damaged, two people were killed, and 19 people were hurt. The earthquake caused a small tsunami, which flooded the streets on Samos.

Though Greece and Turkey have many disagreements, the earthquake has brought the countries a little closer. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and offered his sympathy. “Whatever our differences,” he said, “These are times when our people need to stand together.”

Melbourne is the capital of Victoria, the area hardest hit by the coronavirus. In August, the state had over 700 cases a day. By early last week, there were none. As of Wednesday, Melbourne’s 16,000 stores, 5,800 cafes and 1,000 beauty shops were allowed to re-open.
Though there are still limits, and masks are required, Melbourne’s people were very excited to have the lockdown finally end. Many people celebrated with donuts – the shape representing zero (0) cases.

The coronavirus caused big changes for baseball this year. The season started in July instead of March, and teams only played 60 games, instead of the normal 162.
Sadly, the virus also played a part in the final game of the Series. Justin Turner, who plays third base for the Dodgers, was pulled out near the end of the game, after it was learned that he had tested positive for the coronavirus.
Though Turner was placed in isolation, he broke the rules and put other players at risk by coming out on the field and celebrating with his teammates after the Dodgers won.
