Europe’s First Underwater Restaurant Opens

Lindesnes, Norway —(Map)

Europe’s first underwater restaurant has recently opened in Norway. The restaurant offers visitors the chance to eat seafood while looking out at life under the ocean.

The restaurant is called “Under”, which has a double meaning. Not only is the restaurant underwater, but the word “under” also means “wonder” in Norwegian.

Under is in Lindesnes, at the most southern point of Norway’s coast. The restaurant owners say the area has lots of sea life. This, of course, is the main attraction of Under.

The new restaurant is the largest underwater restaurant in the world. It is 112 feet (34 meters) long. The entrance is above the sea. Once inside, visitors walk down 40 steps to reach the lower level, 16 feet (5 meters) below the surface of the ocean.

There is a floor to ceiling window that allows visitors to see both above and below the sea. At the bottom of the building is the main dining room, which rests on the sea floor and can seat 40 people.

This dining room has a huge window that is 36 feet (11 meters) wide and 11 feet (3.4 meters) high. At night, special lighting will be used to attract fish and other sea creatures in front of the window.

But Under will not just be used by people looking for a meal. When the restaurant is not open, it will be used by scientists researching sea life. Because nothing special is needed, scientists will be able to study small sea creatures over a long period of time – something that is normally impossible.

The owners of the restaurant, two brothers from Norway, also own a hotel in Lindesnes. They believe people will come from all over the world to visit the restaurant and stay in the hotel. They hope to get about 12,000 visitors a year. So far, over 7,000 people have made plans to eat in the restaurant. It is completely full until October.

They will work with scientists who study the ocean to make sure that they use sea creatures in a way that does not have too big of an effect on the undersea environment. One way they will do this is by serving plants and animals from the sea that are not normally thought of as food.

It won’t be cheap to eat at the restaurant though. The cheapest meal will cost about $260.

Under is made of heavy concrete that is 20 inches (50 centimeters) thick. The restaurant was built above the water as a hollow concrete tube with windows. It was then lowered into the sea. The restaurant filled with water as it was put in position and attached to a huge piece of concrete below the sea. Then the water was pumped out, and the inside of the restaurant was built.

The people who created the restaurant hope that it will become like a natural part of the sea over time, with sea animals and plants attaching themselves to it.
