News Roundup: Brexit Deal?, Vaccine Approval, & Bad Bunny

Brexit Deal Before Deadline Looks Unlikely

It’s looking less and less likely that the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) will reach important agreements by the end of the year. At the end of January, the UK officially left the EU. But the deadline for reaching new deals to control how things will work between the two sides was set for December 31.

Brexit is a word made up to describe the British Exit   from the European Union. In 2016, in a special vote called a “referendum”, more than half of the people of the United Kingdom   chose to leave the EU.

Now both sides say it’s looking unlikely that they’ll reach new agreements before the time runs out. The agreements would cover important areas like how things are bought and sold between the two sides, and how they’ll work together in areas like security or medicine.

One especially difficult area is who gets to fish where. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has upset some people by threatening to bring out the UK’s navy to protect British waters from illegal fishing if no deal is reached.

Without new agreements, people in the UK can expect prices to go up for things they buy from Europe. There are also likely to be much longer delays for items crossing the borders. Already, long lines of trucks are backed up, as companies try to bring in as many items as they can before the end of the year.

Coronavirus Vaccine Approved in US and Canada

The US and Canada have both given emergency approval to a coronavirus  vaccine made by the drug companies Pfizer and BioNTech. The vaccine is believed to be about 95% successful at preventing people from getting Covid-19.

Health Canada announced its approval on Wednesday. In the US, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) gave emergency approval on Friday night. Both countries expect to begin giving out the vaccines this coming week.

Two other countries, the UK and Bahrain, have already given the vaccine their approval. The UK began to vaccinate people last week.

Health experts point out that though the vaccine is good news, it doesn’t change how people should behave. In order to get the virus under control, people will still need to follow important health rules like wearing masks and social distancing.

Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has come a long way in a very short period of time. In 2016, he was working in a grocery store and releasing his music on the music-sharing site SoundCloud. Soon, he got a contract with a record company. His first album made it to #11 on the charts.

This year has been a very busy year for Bad Bunny. Some singers take several years to make an album, but Bad Bunny has released three albums this year. All three made the US top ten, but El Último Tour Del Mundo is the first to reach #1.
