The new coronavirus disease, COVID-19,  has continued to spread around the world. The disease has now reached almost every country, and even gotten to islands far away from other areas. The number of cases worldwide continues to go up rapidly.

There have now been over 857,000 cases, and more than 42,100 deaths reported worldwide.

Though the news has been mainly focused on the very serious problems caused by the disease, it’s important to remember that many people who get the illness don’t have serious effects. Most people who get the disease get better. So far, 178,034 people around the world have recovered after having COVID-19.

Around the world, over three billion people are on lockdown.

The disease has now spread to more than 180 countries. Each country is testing and reporting its numbers in its own way. This means that comparing numbers for different countries may not give a true picture of how the disease is actually spreading.

Though COVID-19 started in China, the disease seems to be largely under control there now. Most of China’s new cases are coming from people entering the country. So far, China has had a total of 82,279 cases.

Currently, the five countries with the largest outbreaks are US (188,172 cases), Italy (105,792 cases), Spain (95,923 cases), Germany (71,808 cases), and France (52,827 cases).

The information on this page is based on data from CSSE at Johns Hopkins University, which also provides its own website. The JHU CSSE pulls its data from various government groups around the world.

COVID-19 has been in Afghanistan since February 24. So far, the country has had 174 cases. Most of those have come recently. During the last week, there have been 100 cases – an average of 14.3 a day. That’s far higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 5.8. The disease seems to be spreading far more rapidly. Around 4 people have died, but 5 people have recovered.

COVID-19 has been in Albania since March 9. In all, the country has had 243 cases. Many of those have happened in the last week. In the last week, there have been 120 cases – an average of 17.1 a day. Around 15 people have died, but 52 people have gotten better.

Algeria has been dealing with COVID-19 since February 25. In all, the country has had 716 cases. Most of those have happened in recent days. Over the last week, there have been 452 cases – an average of 64.6 a day. That’s much higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 23.8. The disease seems to be spreading far more rapidly. Around 44 people have died, but 46 people have gotten better.

COVID-19 has been in Andorra since March 2. So far, the country has had 376 cases. Most of those have come in recent days. Over the last week, there have been 212 cases – an average of 30.3 a day. Around 12 people have died, but 10 people have gotten better.

COVID-19 has been in Angola since March 20. In all, the country has had 7 cases. Most of those have happened in the last week. Over the last week, there have been 4 cases – an average of 0.6 a day. Around 2 people have died, but 1 person has recovered.

COVID-19 has been in Antigua and Barbuda since March 13. In all, the country has had 7 cases. Most of the cases have happened in recent days. Over the last week, there have been 4 cases – an average of 0.6 a day. No one has died.

Argentina has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 3. So far, the country has had 1,054 cases. Most of the cases have happened recently. During the last week, there have been 667 cases – an average of 95.3 a day. Around 27 people have died, but 240 people have gotten better.

Armenia has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 1. In all, the country has had 532 cases. Most of the cases have come in recent days. Over the last week, there have been 283 cases – an average of 40.4 a day. That’s much higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 17.7. The disease seems to be spreading much more quickly. Around 3 people have died, but 30 people have gotten better.

Australia has been dealing with COVID-19 since January 26. So far, the country has had 4,559 cases. Most of the cases have come in recent days. Australia is requiring people who enter the country to keep to themselves for 14 days. Citizens of Australia have been told they can’t to travel to other countries. People in Australia are only allowed to leave the house for essential reasons. The country has limited all gatherings, public or private, to just two people. This doesn’t apply to family groups. In the last week, there have been 2,515 cases – an average of 359.3 a day. That’s far higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 151.1. The disease seems to be spreading much more quickly. Around 18 people have died, but 358 people have recovered.

Austria has been dealing with COVID-19 since February 25. In all, the country has had 10,180 cases. Many of the cases have come in recent days. In the last week, there have been 4,897 cases – an average of 699.6 a day. That’s far higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 338.9. The disease seems to be spreading much more quickly. Around 128 people have died, but 1,095 people have gotten better.

COVID-19 has been in Azerbaijan since March 1. In all, the country has had 298 cases. Most of those have come recently. Over the last week, there have been 211 cases – an average of 30.1 a day. That’s much higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 9.8. The disease seems to be spreading much more quickly. Around 5 people have died, but 26 people have recovered.

COVID-19 has been in the Bahamas since March 16. In all, the country has had 14 cases. Most of the cases have happened in recent days. During the last week, there have been 9 cases – an average of 1.3 a day. There have been no deaths, and 1 person has gotten better.

COVID-19 has been in Bahrain since February 24. So far, the country has had 567 cases. During the last week, there have been 175 cases – an average of 25.0 a day. That’s more than the daily average for the last month, which is 17.3. The disease seems to be spreading more quickly. Around 4 people have died, but 295 people have gotten better.

Bangladesh has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 8. So far, the country has had 51 cases. Police and soldiers are being used in Bangladesh to make sure people follow the rules for its 10-day shutdown. During the last week, there have been 12 cases – an average of 1.7 a day. Around 5 people have died, but 25 people have gotten better.

Barbados has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 17. In all, the country has had 34 cases. Many of the cases have happened in the last week. In the last week, there have been 16 cases – an average of 2.3 a day. There have been no deaths.

COVID-19 has been in Belarus since February 28. So far, the country has had 152 cases. Many of those have happened in recent days. Over the last week, there have been 71 cases – an average of 10.1 a day. That’s much higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 5.0. The disease seems to be spreading far more quickly. Around 1 person has died, but 47 people have gotten better.

Belgium has been dealing with COVID-19 since February 4. In all, the country has had 12,775 cases. Most of those have come recently. During the last week, there have been 8,506 cases – an average of 1,215.1 a day. That’s far higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 425.8. The disease seems to be spreading much more quickly. Around 705 people have died, but 1,696 people have recovered.

Belize has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 23. In all, the country has had 3 cases. Most of the cases have happened in the last week. It’s too soon to know how the disease will spread. No one has died.

Benin has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 16. So far, the country has had 9 cases. During the last week, there have been 3 cases – an average of 0.4 a day. No one has died, and 1 person has gotten better.

Bhutan has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 6. So far, the country has had 4 cases. Many of the cases have happened in recent days. It’s too soon to know how the disease is spreading. No one has died.

COVID-19 has been in Bolivia since March 11. So far, the country has had 107 cases. Most of those have happened in recent days. Bolivia has called a state of emergency until April 15. During that time no on is allowed into or out of the country. Over the last week, there have been 78 cases – an average of 11.1 a day. Around 6 people have died.

COVID-19 has been in Bosnia and Herzegovina since March 5. So far, the country has had 420 cases. Most of the cases have happened in the last week. Over the last week, there have been 254 cases – an average of 36.3 a day. Around 13 people have died, but 17 people have recovered.

COVID-19 has only recently been reported in Botswana. It first appeared on March 30. In all, the country has had 4 cases. It’s too soon to know how the disease will spread. Around 1 person has died.

COVID-19 has been in Brazil since February 26. In all, the country has had 5,717 cases. Most of those have come in the last week. Brazil’s largest city, Sao Paolo, has begun a 15-day lockdown of its 46 million people. Over the last week, there have been 3,470 cases – an average of 495.7 a day. That’s much higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 190.5. The disease seems to be spreading far more quickly. Around 201 people have died, but 127 people have recovered.

Brunei has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 9. So far, the country has had 129 cases. In the last week, there have been 25 cases – an average of 3.6 a day. Around 1 person has died, but 45 people have gotten better.

Bulgaria has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 8. So far, the country has had 399 cases. Many of those have come in recent days. During the last week, there have been 181 cases – an average of 25.9 a day. Around 8 people have died, but 17 people have gotten better.

COVID-19 has been in Burkina Faso since March 10. So far, the country has had 261 cases. Most of the cases have happened in recent days. Over the last week, there have been 147 cases – an average of 21.0 a day. Around 14 people have died, but 32 people have recovered.

COVID-19 has only recently been reported in Burma. It first appeared on March 27. In all, the country has had 15 cases. It’s too early to know how the disease is spreading. Around 1 person has died.

On March 31, Burundi reported its first case of COVID-19. So far, the country has had 2 cases. It’s too early to know how the disease is spreading. There have been no deaths.

COVID-19 has been in Cambodia since January 27. In all, the country has had 109 cases. Over the last week, there have been 18 cases – an average of 2.6 a day. That’s lower than the daily average for the last month, which is 3.6. The disease seems to be spreading less quickly. No one has died, and 23 people have recovered.

Cameroon has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 6. So far, the country has had 193 cases. Most of the cases have come in the last week. In the last week, there have been 127 cases – an average of 18.1 a day. Around 6 people have died, but 5 people have recovered.

Canada has been dealing with COVID-19 since January 26. So far, the country has had 8,527 cases. Most of those have come recently. People in Canada have been told to “go home and stay home”. Anyone showing signs of COVID-19 will no longer be allowed to travel by plane or train. The wife of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is “feeling great” as she recovers from the coronavirus. Mr. Trudeau and his wife isolated themselves for two weeks after Ms. Trudeau was found to have the disease. During the last week, there have been 5,737 cases – an average of 819.6 a day. That’s much higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 283.4. The disease seems to be spreading much more quickly. Around 101 people have died, but 1,592 people have recovered.

COVID-19 has been in Cape Verde since March 20. In all, the country has had 6 cases. Many of the cases have happened recently. During the last week, there have been 3 cases – an average of 0.4 a day. Around 1 person has died.

COVID-19 has been in Central African Republic since March 15. In all, the country has had 3 cases. There have been no new cases in the last week. There have been no deaths.

Chad has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 19. So far, the country has had 7 cases. Most of the cases have come in recent days. During the last week, there have been 4 cases – an average of 0.6 a day. No one has died.

Chile has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 3. In all, the country has had 2,738 cases. Most of the cases have happened recently. In the last week, there have been 1,816 cases – an average of 259.4 a day. Around 12 people have died, but 156 people have gotten better.

COVID-19 has been in China since December, 2019. So far, the country has had 82,279 cases. China has stopped allowing people from other countries into the country to prevent an increase in the number of cases entering from outside. China has now opened up Wuhan again. The city where the coronavirus was first detected had been locked down since late January. In the last week, there have been 688 cases – an average of 98.3 a day. That’s higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 78.2. The disease seems to be spreading more quickly. Around 3,309 people have died, but 76,206 people have gotten better.

COVID-19 has been in Colombia since March 6. So far, the country has had 906 cases. Most of those have come recently. During the last week, there have been 528 cases – an average of 75.4 a day. Around 16 people have died, but 31 people have gotten better.

Congo (DRC) has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 11. In all, the country has had 98 cases. Most of those have happened in recent days. Over the last week, there have been 53 cases – an average of 7.6 a day. Around 8 people have died, but 2 people have gotten better.

COVID-19 has been in Costa Rica since March 6. So far, the country has had 347 cases. Many of those have happened in the last week. In the last week, there have been 170 cases – an average of 24.3 a day. Around 2 people have died, but 4 people have recovered.

Cote d’Ivoire has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 11. In all, the country has had 179 cases. Most of those have happened in the last week. Over the last week, there have been 106 cases – an average of 15.1 a day. Around 1 person has died, but 7 people have recovered.

Croatia has been dealing with COVID-19 since February 25. So far, the country has had 867 cases. Most of the cases have come recently. During the last week, there have been 485 cases – an average of 69.3 a day. That’s far higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 28.7. The disease seems to be spreading much more quickly. Around 6 people have died, but 67 people have gotten better.

The disease seems to be spreading far more rapidly. Around 75 people have died, but 54 people have gotten better.

People are only allowed to leave their homes during the daytime. Over the last week, there have been 308 cases – an average of 44.0 a day. Estonia has been dealing with COVID-19 since February 27. In all, the country has had 745 cases. Many of those have come in recent days. In the last week, there have been 376 cases – an average of 53.7 a day. That’s much higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 24.8. The disease seems to be spreading far more quickly. Around 4 people have died, but 26 people have recovered.

Eswatini has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 14. So far, the country has had 9 cases. Most of the cases have happened in recent days. Over the last week, there have been 5 cases – an average of 0.7 a day. No one has died.

COVID-19 has been in Ethiopia since March 13. So far, the country has had 26 cases. Most of the cases have come recently. Ethiopia has released 4,000 people put in prison for minor crimes in an effort to keep the coronavirus from spreading. In the last week, there have been 14 cases – an average of 2.0 a day. There have been no deaths, and 2 people have recovered.

Finland has been dealing with COVID-19 since January 29. In all, the country has had 1,418 cases. Many of those have come in the last week. Finland is limiting travel to and from the southern area that includes the capital Helsinki to keep the disease from spreading to other parts of the country. Over the last week, there have been 626 cases – an average of 89.4 a day. That’s more than the daily average for the last month, which is 47.1. The disease seems to be spreading more rapidly. Around 17 people have died, but 10 people have recovered.

COVID-19 has been in France since January 24. So far, the country has had 52,827 cases. Most of the cases have happened in recent days. France is using a special high-speed train set up like a hospital to move patients from areas with lots of cases to other areas with more room in the hospitals. Over the last week, there have been 30,205 cases – an average of 4,315.0 a day. That’s far higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 1,756.6. The disease seems to be spreading far more rapidly. Around 3,532 people have died, but 9,513 people have recovered.

Gabon has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 14. So far, the country has had 16 cases. Most of those have come recently. Over the last week, there have been 10 cases – an average of 1.4 a day. Around 1 person has died.

Georgia has been dealing with COVID-19 since February 26. So far, the country has had 110 cases. Many of the cases have happened recently. During the last week, there have been 40 cases – an average of 5.7 a day. That’s higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 3.6. The disease seems to be spreading more rapidly, but the overall number of cases is still fairly small. There have been no deaths, and 21 people have gotten better.

Germany has been dealing with COVID-19 since January 27. In all, the country has had 71,808 cases. Most of those have come in recent days. Germany is now able to test 500,000 people a week. In the last week, there have been 38,822 cases – an average of 5,546.0 a day. That’s far higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 2,389.3. The disease seems to be spreading much more quickly. Around 775 people have died, but 16,100 people have gotten better.

Ghana has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 14. In all, the country has had 161 cases. Most of the cases have come recently. During the last week, there have been 108 cases – an average of 15.4 a day. Around 5 people have died, but 31 people have recovered.

COVID-19 has been in Greece since February 26. So far, the country has had 1,314 cases. Many of those have happened in the last week. In the last week, there have been 571 cases – an average of 81.6 a day. That’s more than the daily average for the last month, which is 43.6. The disease seems to be spreading more quickly. Around 49 people have died, but 52 people have recovered.

COVID-19 has been in Haiti since March 20. In all, the country has had 15 cases. Most of the cases have happened in the last week. In the last week, there have been 8 cases – an average of 1.1 a day. No one has died, and 1 person has recovered.

Holy See has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 6. So far, the country has had 6 cases. It’s too soon to know how the disease is spreading. No one has died.

Hungary has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 4. So far, the country has had 492 cases. Most of the cases have come in recent days. During the last week, there have been 305 cases – an average of 43.6 a day. Around 16 people have died, but 37 people have recovered.

Iceland has been dealing with COVID-19 since February 28. In all, the country has had 1,135 cases. Many of the cases have come in recent days. During the last week, there have been 487 cases – an average of 69.6 a day. That’s higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 37.7. The disease seems to be spreading more rapidly. Around 2 people have died, but 198 people have recovered.

India has been dealing with COVID-19 since January 30. So far, the country has had 1,397 cases. Most of the cases have come in the last week. India’s 1.3 billion people have been put on “total lockdown” for 21 days. Prime Minister Narendra Modi apologized for the country’s lockdown, which has been especially hard on poor people. Mr. Modi said the lockdown was needed to beat the coronavirus. Over the last week, there have been 861 cases – an average of 123.0 a day. That’s much higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 46.5. The disease seems to be spreading far more rapidly. Around 35 people have died, but 123 people have gotten better.

Indonesia has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 2. In all, the country has had 1,528 cases. Most of those have come in recent days. During the last week, there have been 842 cases – an average of 120.3 a day. Around 136 people have died, but 81 people have recovered.

COVID-19 has been in Iran since February 19. So far, the country has had 44,605 cases. Many of those have come in recent days. Travel between different cities in Iran has been stopped to help keep the disease under control. The country has started producing large numbers of tests for COVID-19. Iran is also increasing the other medical gear it is making, such as masks, suits, and ventilators. In the last week, there have been 19,794 cases – an average of 2,827.7 a day. That’s higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 1,454.2. The disease seems to be spreading more quickly. Around 2,898 people have died, but 14,656 people have recovered.

COVID-19 has been in Iraq since February 24. In all, the country has had 694 cases. Most of the cases have happened recently. Iraq has begun a curfew. People are not allowed to leave their homes, except between 8 am and 2 pm. During the last week, there have been 378 cases – an average of 54.0 a day. That’s far higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 22.5. The disease seems to be spreading far more quickly. Around 50 people have died, but 170 people have gotten better.

Ireland has been dealing with COVID-19 since February 29. In all, the country has had 3,235 cases. Most of those have come recently. In the last week, there have been 1,906 cases – an average of 272.3 a day. That’s much higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 107.8. The disease seems to be spreading far more rapidly. Around 71 people have died, but 5 people have recovered.

COVID-19 has been in Israel since February 21. In all, the country has had 5,358 cases. Most of those have come in the last week. In the last week, there have been 4,120 cases – an average of 588.6 a day. That’s far higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 178.3. Italy has extended its nationwide lockdown until April 12. In the last week, there have been 36,616 cases – an average of 5,230.9 a day. That’s more than the daily average for the last month, which is 3,469.9. The disease seems to be spreading more rapidly. Around 12,428 people have died, but 15,729 people have gotten better.

Jamaica has been dealing with COVID-19 since March 11. So far, the country has had 36 cases. Many of the cases have happened recently. Over the last week, there have been 15 cases – an average of 2.1 a day. Around 1 person has died, but 2 people have recovered.

COVID-19 has been in Japan since January. In all, the country has had 1,953 cases. Many of the cases have come in the last week. Japan has warned its citizens against traveling to 49 countries, including the US. In the last week, there have been 760 cases – an average of 108.6 a day. That’s higher than the daily average for the last month, which is 56.6. The disease seems to be spreading more rapidly. Around 56 people have died, but 424 people have gotten better.

There is a 24-hour curfew in Jordan, meaning people are not allowed to leave their homes. During the last week, there have been 120 cases – an average of 17.1 a day. Around 5 people have died, but 30 people have gotten better.
