Paris, France —(Map)
Notre-Dame, one of the world’s most famous churches, officially reopened on Saturday. The church was badly damaged by a fire in 2019. The reopening was celebrated with a special service attended by many world leaders.
Notre-Dame is an 860-year-old church in Paris which has played an important part in France’s history for hundreds of years. In the past, it was the church where France’s kings and queens went to church and were married or buried.
The church is famous around the world for the beauty of its complicated design and also for the art works it contains. The church sits in the heart of Paris and, up until 2019, it was visited by around 13 million tourists each year.
In April, 2019, a fire broke out at Notre-Dame. It is believed that the fire was started by accident. The blaze was difficult to control. 600 firefighters worked for hours. But by the time the fire was out, the church’s roof had been destroyed and the church’s tall spire (the pointed part on top) had collapsed.
The damage to Notre-Dame upset people around the world. French President Emmanuel Macron called the fire a “terrible tragedy”. He promised to rebuild the church, and to do it in five years.
Many people thought the plan was impossible. The challenge of rebuilding Notre-Dame was enormous. But with donations from people around the world, the money was raised and the work began. The rebuilding required 2,000 skilled workers, and cost around $740 million.
On Saturday, the church was officially reopened. Not only was Notre-Dame rebuilt, but it had also been cleaned in a way that hadn’t happened for a long time.

The opening ceremony was set to take place outside the church, but bad weather forced the service to be moved inside.
The church’s bells were rung, and the leader of the Catholic church in Paris, Laurent Ulrich, knocked on the church’s door with a special stick to officially reopen Notre-Dame. Many church leaders took part in the ceremony, including over 170 bishops from around the world.
Over 2,000 others attended the ceremony, including many world leaders. In his speech during the ceremony, Mr. Macron said that “great nations” can “accomplish the impossible”.

Mr. Macron is in a difficult spot. France’s government collapsed last week after the prime minister Mr. Macron appointed was forced out in a no-confidence vote. Mr. Macron is hoping to use the reopening of Notre-Dame and the visits of important leaders as a reminder of his leadership and of France’s power.
Guests seemed impressed with the newly repaired church and its connection to history. As part of the ceremony, the church’s massive organ was played. The organ, which has 8,000 pipes, is the largest in France.
The grand opening of Notre-Dame is a historic moment. The church is important to many people, whether they go to church or not. Notre-Dame is part of the history of France, and has now become a symbol of how the country has come back after a difficult time.
