On Monday, thousands of Palestinians began to return to their homes in north Gaza. It was their first opportunity to return to the area in over a year, thanks to a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Most Palestinians seemed excited to return, even though most buildings in the area have been destroyed.
Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire, bringing a temporary end to the fighting between the two sides. The ceasefire began on Sunday, January 19, and will last for six weeks. As part of the ceasefire, Hamas will release Israeli hostages, and Israel will release Palestinian prisoners.
Monday marked one year from a brutal attack on Israel by the militant group Hamas. Since then, fighting has grown in the region, with Israel now involved in serious fighting in Gaza and Lebanon. Recently, concern has grown as Iran has joined the conflict.
Health care workers have begun a huge effort to vaccinate children in Gaza against polio. The effort comes as the area faces a polio outbreak for the first time in 25 years. The vaccination drive is being made possible by short breaks in the fighting between Israel and Hamas.
