On Tuesday, NATO begins a two-day meeting in Ankara, Turkey. The 32-nation group is meeting at a difficult time. They have to work together to support Ukraine. At the same time, NATO must deal with the fact that the US – one of its most important members – is not supporting the group as strongly as before.
NATO
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is a group of countries that has agreed to work together to defend each other if any one of them is attacked. The group was created after World War II. Now there are 32 members in the group. The US, Canada, and many European countries are part of NATO.

In recent years, one of NATO’s biggest challenges has been supporting Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s invasion. Ukraine has surprised many people by fighting Russia off for over four years. Along the way it has needed a lot of help from the US and Europe – and NATO.
Ukraine isn’t a member of NATO, but protecting Ukraine is seen as being extremely important for protecting the rest of Europe. Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, will visit during the NATO meeting to ask for more support.
NATO’s members have promised they will support Ukraine, but there are concerns about how to keep that support going. The US has been the biggest supporter of Ukraine. But under President Donald Trump, US support for both NATO and Ukraine is very uncertain.

Mr. Trump has changed his ideas about supporting Ukraine several times. He has even scolded and embarrassed Mr Zelensky publicly. In recent months, fighting between Russia and Ukraine has grown more intense. But it has gotten less attention because of the US and Israel’s war with Iran.
Many people are curious to see how Mr. Trump will act at the NATO meeting. Mr. Trump has often complained about NATO and questioned whether the US should support it. He has even suggested that the US doesn’t have to help defend other NATO countries if they are attacked. Of course, agreeing to defend each other is why the group was formed in the first place.

Many people are curious to see how Mr. Trump will act at the NATO meeting. Mr. Trump has often complained about NATO. Above, Mr. Trump sitting between Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer (left), and NATO leader Mark Rutte (right) during NATO’s yearly meeting last year.
In recent months, Mr. Trump has been upset with NATO members for not joining the US in the war against Iran. But NATO’s purpose is defense. That means members only have to fight if one of them is attacked, not every time one of them starts a war.
Mr. Trump has complained that European countries don’t spend enough on their militaries. This is starting to change. In the last year, European countries and Canada have increased their military spending by about $139 billion. One reason for this extra spending is that these countries are no longer sure they can count on the US.
The location of the NATO meeting has raised some concerns. Turkey is an important NATO member. It has NATO’s second-largest military. Turkey is also in a key position between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

In recent days, Turkish police have arrested over 225 people. Police say they’re investigating terrorist groups. But the people arrested include reporters, lawyers, and professors.
Many people see a big difference between NATO’s aims to support freedom and democracy, and the recent actions of the Turkish government.
