Mexico’s president, Enrique Peña Nieto, was planning to visit the US soon. But after an unhappy phone call with US President Donald Trump, he has decided not to come.
When Mr. Trump was running for president, he made some voters happy by complaining about immigrants. Immigrants are people who leave their own country to live in another one. Mr. Trump said that he wanted to build a wall between the US and Mexico to keep the immigrants out. He said he would make Mexico pay for building the wall. People who liked Mr. Trump thought it was a good idea. Other people thought it was silly.
People in Mexico did not like the idea. They thought it was insulting. President Peña Nieto said that Mexico would not pay for a wall. When Mr. Trump became president in January of 2017, Mr. Peña Nieto was planning to visit Washington. But he changed his mind after a phone call with Mr. Trump, because Mr. Trump said he was still going to ask Mexico to pay for the wall.
During the phone call, Mr. Trump said, “…I have to have Mexico pay for the wall. . . If you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I cannot live with that.” So Mr. Peña Nieto did not come to Washington.
Now, a year later, the same thing has happened again. This time the Mexican president was planning to visit the US in February or March to meet with Mr. Trump. They made a phone call to plan the meeting. People who heard the call say that Mr. Trump “lost his temper”. Mr. Peña Nieto wanted Mr. Trump to say that Mexico would not pay for the wall. Mr. Trump refused.
People from the US government are still talking with people from the Mexican government. They are trying to solve other problems that affect both countries. But for now, President Peña Nieto will not visit the US.
