News Roundup: Fishing Fight, World Series, & a Winning Bat

France and United Kingdom Work to Settle Fishing Fight

France and the United Kingdom (UK) have peacefully resolved a serious argument over fishing rights. The two countries have had a growing disagreement over fishing in waters around the UK and near the island of Jersey. Jersey’s not part of the UK, but the UK is responsible for it. The island is also very close to France.

Since the UK left the European Union (EU), EU fishing boats have needed a license to fish in these waters. But France says the UK is making it hard for French fishing boats to get licenses.

Over the last few weeks, tensions between the two sides have grown higher. France took control of a British fishing boat that it claimed was fishing illegally. France also threatened to make it far harder for all British products to enter the EU.

Now, after holding talks, the two sides say they are closer to coming to an agreement.

This isn’t the first time there have been high tensions over fishing in the area. Last May, both countries even sent Navy boats to Jersey to help protect their fishing rights.

The fifth inning was just as strong for the Braves. A home run by Dansby Swanson brought in two runs, and Freddy Freeman drove in another run, bringing the score to 6-0. Another homer by Freeman in the seventh inning made it clear that Atlanta was going to walk off with the championship.

Atlanta won the 2021 World Series 4 games to 2. It’s the first time the Braves have won the series since 1995, and their fourth series win overall.

New Zealand’s Bird of the Year Award Goes to…a Bat

The winner of New Zealand’s “Bird of theYear” award this year was a little unusual. That’s because it wasn’t a bird at all, but a bat (which is a mammal).

Every year, a group called Forest and Bird holds a Bird of the Year contest. They hope the contest will make people more aware of all the different kinds of life in New Zealand, and especially of animals that are endangered.

This year, the group decided to include the two different kinds of bats that live in New Zealand as well. Organizers point out that bats are threatened much like birds – by predators like cats and rats, and by human-caused problems like the loss of forests and climate change.

About 56,700 people voted in the online contest. The most popular choice by far was the long-tailed bat, also known as the pekapeka-tou-roa, winning by several thousand votes. The pekapeka is an amazing animal. Though it’s only about the size of an adult’s thumb, it’s able to fly between trees at speeds of up to 35 mph (56 kph).
