The United States and Iran appear to be close to reaching a peace agreement to end the current war. But important details of the deal are not clear, and there are still many questions about what the agreement will include.
Nearly six weeks after the US and Israel attacked Iran, a ceasefire was reached on April 8. Since then, efforts at peace talks have run into many problems. US President Donald Trump has often threatened to begin bombing Iran again.
Iran’s greatest strength has been that it has closed the Strait of Hormuz. Roughly 20% of the world’s oil and gas pass through this important waterway. The strait has remained closed all through the ceasefire, which has driven up fuel prices and caused serious problems worldwide.

In recent days, there has been an increased effort to find a peaceful solution to the war. In recent days, there has been an increased effort to find a peaceful solution to the war. A spokesman for Iran says the two sides are in the “final stage” of talks. On Saturday, Mr. Trump said the deal is “largely” settled.
Even so, the two sides are sharing slightly different ideas about how the agreement might work.
Mr. Trump said the deal would open the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s government hasn’t confirmed that part of the deal. Some sources suggest that Iran still aims to keep tight control over the strait.

Iran’s greatest strength has been that it has closed the Strait of Hormuz, which has been causing serious problems worldwide. The deal is expected to reopen the strait. Above, a billboard in Tehran, Iran, showing the Strait of Hormuz, with a caption which says: “Forever in Iran’s Hand”.
The deal is expected to happen in two parts. The first part is meant to bring an end to the fighting. Part one is also expected to open the strait and to allow Iran to start selling oil again.
One of the biggest challenges to a deal has been reaching an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program. Iran claims its nuclear program is peaceful and only meant to produce power. But many Western countries believe Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon. Iran has some dangerous uranium stored.
During the first part of the deal, Iran is expected to promise not to work toward nuclear weapons. The second part of the deal will take place over the next 30 to 60 days. That’s when details of how Iran’s nuclear program will be controlled are expected to be worked out.

The deal must resolve many problems. These include getting Iran-supported militant groups in other countries to stop fighting, and making sure that other nearby countries, including Israel, agree with the deal. Some of the other important problems facing the deal include:
- How will the Strait of Hormuz be controlled?
- What will happen to Iran’s uranium?
- What will happen to the missiles that Iran still has?
- Will the militant groups which support Iran from other countries also stop fighting?
- Iran has as much as $25 billion that’s being blocked by sanctions. How will this be released?
- Will other nearby countries, including Israel, agree with the deal?

Many details about the deal still need to be worked out. And both sides will need to agree to the final version. But already, some people think Mr. Trump may be making a mistake. They believe the deal does not make strong enough demands of Iran.
The current situation is tense and tricky. If the deal leads to a lasting peace, it could be a big success. If not, the situation could become dangerous once more.
