US-China, US-Iran, & an Ebola Outbreak

Today, NewsForKids.net looks at three important stories: Last week, United States President Donald Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Now Mr. Trump is back in the US, threatening to attack Iran again. And the WHO says a deadly outbreak of the Ebola virus in Africa is an international emergency.

Results of US-China Summit Unclear

During last week’s two-day summit in Beijing, Mr. Trump and Mr. Xi spoke about many important issues. While both sides praised the talks, it’s not clear what was actually agreed upon.

Experts say the summit was a big win for China, because it showed China as being equal to the US on the world stage. After attacking China with tariffs several times over the last year, Mr. Trump seemed eager to get along with Mr. Xi, whom he called a “great leader”.

Mr. Trump says the two sides made some “fantastic trade deals”. There aren’t many details about the deals, but Mr. Trump says that China will now be buying more airplanes and farm products from the US.

Mr. Xi focused intensely on Taiwan, saying it was the “most important issue” between the US and China. Mr. Xi warned that if the US keeps selling weapons to Taiwan, it could lead to a “conflict” between the two countries.

China and Taiwan

China says the island of Taiwan belongs to it. China has long threatened to use force to take control of Taiwan. The US tries to work with China in many different areas, but it has also promised to help Taiwan defend itself.

Currently, the US is working on a plan to sell Taiwan $14 billion worth of weapons. Mr. Trump has suggested that he might stop the sale if it helps him make deals with China.

As Ceasefire Continues, Trump Threatens Iran

For much of the world, the biggest concern right now is the war in Iran. China supports Iran, which provides a lot of fuel to China. Mr. Trump was hoping that China might help end the war. But Mr. Xi didn’t seem willing to help Mr. Trump in this way.

Ending the War With Iran

After the US and Israel attacked Iran, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz. Roughly 20% of the world’s oil and gas flow through this waterway. The resulting fuel shortage and high prices have caused serious problems around the world. The war on Iran is very unpopular in the US and other countries, but Mr. Trump is finding it hard to reach an acceptable peace deal.

Mr. Trump is now back in the US, and is threatening to attack Iran again despite the ceasefire. Mr. Trump said he had planned to attack on May 19, but decided to wait after several Middle Eastern leaders asked him to delay.

Iran is reported to have sent the US a new peace plan. Earlier peace plans have failed because the US and Iran couldn’t agree on how to limit Iran’s nuclear program and how to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Deadly Ebola Outbreak in Africa Triggers International Concern

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a global health emergency over a new outbreak of the Ebola virus. This outbreak is affecting parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda.

The Ebola Virus

Ebola is a rare, but deadly disease that causes great pain, bleeding, and, often, death. Ebola spreads easily and can affect people quickly, so it is important to keep sick people away from healthy people. This specific version of the virus – called the Bundibugyo virus – is difficult to fight because there are currently no approved vaccines or special medicines to treat it.

The outbreak began in a mining area in eastern DRC. So far the outbreak has led to nearly 400 cases and over 100 deaths. Most cases have been in the DRC, but two were found in Uganda.

Health experts are worried because the virus started over a month ago and was reported late. They are concerned that it could be spreading.

Stopping the spread is difficult. The affected area is hard to travel in, and there is fighting there. Still, teams are working to find and isolate people who might be sick. They hope to keep the disease from spreading further.

Did You Know…?
Money is needed to fight the Ebola outbreak. The WHO hopes that declaring an emergency will encourage other countries to send money and support. In the past, the US was a strong supporter of work to control Ebola. But under Mr. Trump, the US has left the WHO and made huge cuts in its spending to help other countries.
