Trump Stops Wind Project That’s 80% Complete

Rhode Island —(Map)

A huge offshore wind farm project near Rhode Island has been suddenly stopped by the US government. The project, which is 80% completed, was meant to bring clean energy to hundreds of thousands of homes. Some people worry that the government is making it too hard for wind power projects to succeed.

Revolution Wind is a $6.2 billion wind farm being built by a Danish company called Orsted. The wind farm is located in the sea off the coast of Rhode Island and Connecticut. When it’s finished, the farm will have 65 large wind turbines, and is expected to create enough energy to power 350,000 homes.

The project has already been reviewed many times by the US government, and has been approved each time. Construction on the project began in 2023 and is about 80% finished. Revolution was expected to begin delivering clean energy to Rhode Island and Connecticut next spring.

But last week, the US government suddenly ordered the work to stop. The government said it had “national security” concerns, but didn’t explain what those concerns were. The move confused many people, since the project had already been approved, and there were no known problems.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, who wants the project to keep going, said, “They have offered no facts to justify this lawless, reckless decision.”

Many people believe Mr. Trump’s government is trying to limit wind energy. President Trump has often spoken out against wind energy. He believes the US should focus on fossil fuels like oil and natural gas instead.

Many people believe the Trump administration is trying to limit wind energy. President Trump has often spoken out against wind energy. Currently wind power provides over 10% of the US’s electricity. Above, an offshore wind farm in the Netherlands built by the Danish company Orsted.

That’s the opposite of the position taken by the US government under Ex-President Joe Biden. Mr. Biden’s government worked to encourage renewable energy sources and to tackle the climate crisis.

The US Interior Department, which is responsible for managing offshore wind projects, says that under Mr. Trump, the government is “putting an immediate stop to these costly failures.”

Currently wind power provides over 10% of the US’s electricity. Experts say that without the electricity from the wind farm, there could be more blackouts in the future.

The government’s actions are causing big problems for companies that build wind farms. Many people worry that these actions will make it much harder for the US to develop more wind power.

The government’s actions could make it harder for the US to develop more wind power. Experts say that project delays could cost Orsted up to $25 million a week. Around 1,200 people would lose their jobs if the project is stopped. Above, work on the Revolution Wind project in Providence, Rhode Island in June, 2024.

Orsted, the company behind Revolution Wind, says it’s considering going to court over the government’s decision. But even if they do, the delay is likely to cost the company a lot of money. Experts say that every week the project is delayed could cost the company up to $25 million.

Politicians from Rhode Island and Connecticut say they’ll keep working to complete the Revolution Wind project. But they aren’t even sure what the government wants or what its concerns are. Around 1,200 people would lose their jobs if the project is permanently stopped.

The situation raises a serious question about the future of wind energy in the US: Why should people put money into wind power projects if the US government can and will suddenly stop a wind farm project that’s already been approved and is nearly complete?

Did You Know…?
This isn’t the first time Mr. Trump’s government has stopped a wind farm. Earlier, the government also halted the Empire Wind project off the coast of New York and the Lava Ridge Wind Project in Idaho. In both cases, the government claimed there were problems, but didn’t explain the concerns clearly. The Empire Wind project was later allowed to continue, but the delay cost the company close to $1 billion.
