Four Years of Russia’s War on Ukraine
Today marks four years of Russia’s war on Ukraine. On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine. Many people expected the war to end quickly, but Ukraine held out against Russia’s more powerful forces. This encouraged Western countries to give Ukraine more support.

The war has been extremely deadly. Ukraine has lost as many as 140,000 soldiers, and Russia has lost around 325,000. Nearly 15,000 civilians in Ukraine have also been killed. Tens of thousands of people have been wounded or are missing. And millions of others have been forced to leave their homes.
As the war has gone on, Russia has focused more on attacking Ukraine’s cities and energy supplies. These attacks have caused large areas of Ukraine to lose power and heat, making life very hard for the people who live there.

At first, the United States and other Western countries supported Ukraine strongly. But under President Donald Trump, US support has been much less certain. Recently, Europe has taken on more of the work of supporting Ukraine.
Mr. Trump has encouraged peace talks, but these have not been successful. Ukraine wants to keep all of its land and make sure it will be protected from Russia in the future. Russia wants Ukraine to give up some land and to promise not to join Western groups like NATO. Mr. Trump seems to support Russia’s ideas.
Peace talks are continuing, but for now, it seems like the war will go on.

Controlling Iran’s Nuclear Technology
For years Western countries have been worried that Iran is working to build nuclear weapons. Iran claims its plans are peaceful and that it only wants nuclear technology to produce power. But there have also been many signs that Iran is secretly working to create nuclear weapons.
In 2015, the US and several other countries signed an agreement with Iran to keep limits on its nuclear technology. Mr. Trump backed out of that deal in 2018. Since he was re-elected president, Mr. Trump has been hoping to make a new deal with Iran.
In January, huge protests broke out in Iran. The protests were put down violently by Iran’s religious government. At the time, Mr Trump threatened to attack Iran. In recent days, new protests have broken out.
The US says it prefers to settle the problems through talks, but it’s also making strong military moves. Just last June, the US bombed nuclear targets in Iran. Now, the US has sent soldiers, warships, submarines, and fighter jets to areas near Iran. The military moves look like the US is preparing for a possible attack.

Iran has responded with its own military actions, meant to show its strength in the area. Iran’s leaders have warned that if the US attacks, Iran might target US bases nearby.
Last Friday, Mr. Trump gave Iran 10 to 15 days to make a deal. With such large differences in the positions of the two countries, it will be a challenge to reach an agreement on such a tight deadline.
