Scientists Create Air-Powered Robot That Walks & Swims

Scientists in the Netherlands have created a soft-bodied robot that’s powered by air. The robot doesn’t have a computer or a “brain”, but even so, it’s able to walk and swim on its own.


Scientists Create World’s Tiniest Violin

Scientists at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom have created what they call “the world’s smallest violin”. The violin is made of metal and is so tiny that it can only be seen with a powerful microscope. The project was designed to test new technology for building extremely small things.


China Begins Building the World’s Biggest Dam

On Saturday, China began building what is expected to be the world’s largest dam. The dam, which is in Tibet, will produce massive amounts of electricity. But it has upset people in India and Bangladesh, who are worried about how the dam will affect them.


Scientists Recreate 30,000-Year-Old Ocean Journey

Scientists from Japan and Taiwan may have solved an old mystery: how did ancient people with simple tools and little scientific knowledge make long, dangerous ocean trips to new places? To test their ideas, the researchers made a trip of their own in a canoe they built from a tree using stone tools.


World’s Largest “Sand Battery” Heats Finnish Town

A town in Finland has begun using the world’s largest “sand battery” to help provide heat. The unusual method of storing energy allows the town to create heat when electricity prices are cheap, and store it for long periods of time. The heat can then be used whenever it’s needed.


40 Years of Making Software “Free”

The Free Software Foundation celebrated its 40th birthday last Saturday. First started in 1985, the FSF has helped shape the digital world we live in today. Its ideas about free software inspired the open‑source movement; now open‑source programs run on countless computers, phones, and devices around the globe.


China Opens World’s Tallest Bridge

China already held the record for the world’s tallest bridge. Now it has beaten its own record with an even higher bridge – one which crosses 2,051 feet (625 meters) above the Beipan River in Guizhou province. The bridge is expected to make travel much faster, and to bring tourists to the area.


ISS Celebrates 25 Years of People Living in Space

This week marks 25 years of humans living in space. On November 2, 2000, three astronauts became the first full-time workers at the International Space Station. Since then, the ISS has never been empty.
